Skim The Fat Off Your Winter Stews

Skimming Fat from Milk is much the same process as skimming it from a Stew, Hot Pot and Soup. This also allows you to make some healthy and filling meals ahead of time, so 5 minutes in the microwave isn’t such a bad thing after all.

Skimming Made-Easy:
All you do is allow your meal stew or hot-pot to go cold and a thin layer of fat will raise and form at the top, simply scoop it off and discard it.

What I did was buy these plastic food containers, from Ikea which are various sizes from single portion upto chopped veg in the fridge size. I then put out my stew or hot pot into small ‘snack’ size containers, and some larger meal size containers, and put them in the fridge and any extra into the freezer, for next time.

Why The Freezer ?
Well food like this will only keep for 2-3 days in the fridge and if like me you have Slow Cooker or a Croc Pot, which makes 4 liters of whatever which is like 12 Cans of soup, its way to much to eat in 3 days. So I make my 4 liters of stew or hot pot, I skim it, then I freeze roughly half of it and fridge the other half and I’m set with a low calorie healthy ready in 5 minute snacks and meals for a few days.

What Can I Cook?
Since I have talked about my Slow Cooker, I thought I’d add a little about the 2 books I bought which I use with it all the time. The first one I bought was specific to the slow cooker for newbies so I could guage its use as it was totally alien to me, to leave something cooking for 6 hours while I went to work.  This book is pretty simple to follow and easy use, I have only made a few things out of this book, but I bought it because it seemed aimed at totally new to slow cooker people which was me all over. My mum had an old pressure cooker somewhere which she used to make hot pot in, which is what gave me the idea to buy one when she was winter cleaning.

I had the previous year bought a book which was pretty much 1,001 Low-Fat Soup and Stew Recipes, and I’ve made about 30 of them. I am currently in LOVE with the Chicken and Chestnut Mushroom Soup, which I have added Potato, Celery, Onion and Carrots to to make it into more a stew or hot pot than a soup but its soooo very good.

Top Tip: If your going to freeze containers, squeeze some air out of them so they are indented by the vacume inside, this allow for the freezing process to expand them container without damaging it.
